smoked mackerel flakes (kiln baked) storage questions

The vacuum packet says this product is not suitable for home freezing whereas the use by date is today. So,the question is - Why cannot it be frozen;loss of quality or it has been frozen before? Also, would fridge storage be okay for a few days?
Thanks.

In the end, I put a couple of these in the freezer for near future usage. However, I've a chance of getting a bigger supply this Saturday (reduced!). They look very much like the Tesco value ones, so I therefore ask instead, has anybody froze these types? Did it say on the back of the packet about freezing or not?
  • I've never tried freezing it by itself - but I do freeze smoked mackerel mixed in mashed potato (with cheese and wholegrain mustard!!) and it has always been lovely. I just give it a few stirs when I'm re-heating it in the microwave. Maybe you could make meals up first and then freeze. Personally I can't see a problem as long as the fish isn't off!! Probably the worst thing that can happen is that it might go a bit soft/mushy but if you are using it as an ingredient that may not matter. Can you let me know how you get on as we LOVE mackerel .....I'd love the opportunity to get hold of a load cheaply!! Lucky you!!

the other mce, thanks for your reply. I had considered your idea (putting the mackerel in a recipe first). I am not bothered about mackerel becoming "soft/mushy" so long as my preparation/storage is safe. Anyhow, I'll see what happens this Saturday about obtaining it reduced. Like yourselves, one of my favourite fish; so will let you know.

the other mce, I said I'd let you know - I could've purchased the reduced smoked mackerel at 39p 120gr but wanted it the price I paid last time(I got five packets at 19p each!). These prices were based upon the store not being able to sell the fish at full price (79p) and I've not seen it stocked there before (Heron Foods). Anyway,I'm pleased to use my previous frozen stock of which I have three left in the freezer. Was this what you wanted to know?
