I have to save ££ on vets bills.

Before I start, I just want to say, I'd gladly starve to get my dog the medication she needs, she's 14/15 approx, dont know exactly as I rescued her when she was a little puppy. She recently had a stroke/or has a brain tumor, they cant be certain without a brain scan Vet said it could cost in excess of 1000 to get her a scan, and this may not even show any conclusive results. The vet prescribed a 2 week supply of VIVITONIN, the bill came to around £40. I searched the net and found some helpful advice regarding a product named AKITAVAIT which is a food supplement, so I got her some of those to try, another £20, for a 2mnth supply, which isn't bad. I've also been recommended to try her on IAMS for mature dogs, which I have given her, and she wolfs it down.Which isn't cheap.
The drugs seem to be working, she doesn't appear drunk anymore, she can walk without her legs wobbling, she doesn't cry she's generally a happy lil woofa!!
I've searched on the net for VIVITONIN and have found a site, bestpets pharmacy, which supply a months worth of vivitonin for under £20, but, they require a script from the vet... Has anyone got any experience of getting prescription drugs this way, i'd like some advice before I go to the vets. Can anyone advise please, much appreciated. I love my dog, she's been with me through 3 relationships, 2flats and a house, she's always been there for me, and i want to do all I can for her, she's my baby.......

I would ask my vet for your dogs prescription (he CAN NOT charge you for this its agains't the law now) and go to an independant veterinary pharmacist like vet medic they will be cheaper for medication.

The link to dog pages is a great site I have been a member for a few years now :D

Does anyone know if you can the complete dog food anywhere apart from the vets
My dog is on a diet and his lost nearly all his weight but ive been buying it from the vets which is quite expensive i just wondered if there is a place or buy online cheaper

I would buy online if they are a lot cheaper, Vets are so expensive and will probably put you off buying from someone else
A decent vet should know about cheaper places for medicines etc and should tell you
I would personally check to make sure its 100% safe and im sure it is otherwise they wouldnt have asked for the prescription
If you have any questions e-mail them first to put your own mind at ease
  • I work full time, even though I probably have less money than some people that dont work at all. Could probably have got someone to take her to PDSA for me, but thats just wrong. Lie I say, I'd starve to make sure she got her med's- wouldn't hurt for me to loose a few pounds, especialy now all she can manage is a quick turn round the block.
thank you all, I'll make sure the vet gives me his signature so I can get an online prescription for her.I looked at the supermarket own brand dog foods, for older dogs, but stupidly thought that given tghe huge price difference that there must be something missing from it. At the mo I mix a handfull of Iams with ASDA's mature dog dry food, she always scoffs the Iams first. Hills Science b/d was mentioned also, but that was more expensive than the Iams. Have checked prices on EbAY and seem to be the cheapest. Not bothered bout food so much it was the drugs, but if I get them half price/double the amount, then I'm a happy bunny, and so is Floyd my aged manchester terrier.
    Thankyou all!!

I have just got a prescription for some flea treatment for my cats (frontline) from my vet. No problem at all, I just phoned and asked for it and picked it up the next day, they were very helpful but just warned me to be careful where I got it from as there had been some publicity about counterfeit pet drugs for sale on the net. I am intending to order it from vet medic, which is selling it about one third cheaper than my vet.

I use https://www.vetuk.co.uk which i found was cheaper for my dog for pancreatic enzmes, also because of the condition had to go on a low fat diet and the food from the vets was very expensive so i did a bit of reasearch and my dog has chappie which you can get in tin or complete and is fairly inexpensive i also put one of my other dogs on the chappie cos he was a bit overweight and he has actually lost weight on it which is great,so the one who has the illness has gained the weight back she lost due to the condition, and the other one who is overweight has lost it,also chappie is made by the same manufactures as the expensive stuff i got from the vets which was 5 times as expensive

You don't get them free. PDSA require a "donation" and will often have posters with suggestions on a % of what the actual bill would cost. RSPCA have a tier system. People on Income Support etc where they qualify for housing benefit would still pay something but would be less than the taxi fare to get there. People on WTC (like myself) would pay about £8 for the consultation and a couple of quid ontop for treatment such as a course of antibiotics. Any subsequent trips to the RSPCA for the same complaint would be about £4 consultation.

My heart goes out to you Singlehouseholder. My cat, Whisky was sadly put to sleep last week due to having a brain tumor. She was almost 18 and had been displaying symptoms for a few weeks beforehand. She was put on a course of steriods which initially helped and she was almost her usual self but within 3 weeks they just weren't enough and sadly I had to make that awful decision. I miss her terribly.
