remortgaging an Eco house

Hi,
I'd appreciate some help finding a fixed rate (but would be interested in other types also) mortgage for a modern eco house. We initially got a mortgage before building our house but that provider is no longer issuing new mortgages and, having been to a Mortgage Broker, it would appear that providers are not keen on timber frame houses with cedar shingle roofs. This sort of technology is common place in Europe, but seems to scare mortgage lenders (and home insurers --from experience) unnecessarily. Anyone help?
Thanks
Helen

    Hi Helen,

Sorry I don' know the answer, but I just wanted to say congratulations on building your own home. It must feel like a fantastic achievement!
Your best bet would be to contact a mortgage broker regarding lenders who would accept your house - and there's nothing to stop you going to the lender directly yourself once you know who will give you a mortgage.
Thanks for highlighting this issue that lots of self builders must face when re-mortgaging their not-so-standard home away from their self build product.
    Good luck!
  • Hi,

Well done on having the guts and know how to build such a house!

Have you tried Ecology Building society?

Ecology BS would be my first port of call too, but both Norwich & Peterborough BS and Co-op will lend against straw bale houses, so maybe worth trying them.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
