Economics and Mathematics

I am looking to study these courses as A Levels from home

Anyone that has done these qalifications before, do you reckon it would be a wise idea doing them as a self study course or do you think it would be easier with a tutor in front of me?

What level is your Maths at currently?

Economics you can learn from a book, no problem. If you are confident in Maths, you can teach yourself (I use the Heinemann books if you are doing Edexcel), but if you need some help I would do a classroom based course.
    Gone ... or have I?

A Level Maths is different to GCSE Maths

    Statistics is similar
Pure is more complex but similar
    Discrete is completely different
(Some people do Mechanics instead of discrete if they are interested in engineering etc.)

I think if you put in a lot of effort they can be done at home - but it will be easier with someone to help you

I was hopeless at economics for the first 4 months until it finally clicked lol - eventually got an A though. It is a very interesting course

some of the examiners like to use this guys articles in the exams: http://www.economicsuk.com/blog/

    this book is excellent: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0199150710/ref=sib_rdr_dp

they expect diagrams in exam answers

and also read the business sections in the broadsheets
  • Thank you 456789

I think in regards to maths, i will most probably do an evening course for that then, i rather not take the risk of doing it all alone and fail, lol

Looking at this years A level papers when I was invigilating, I would say the problem is more an understanding of what is wanted in the answer than an understanding of the maths.
Some questions are really badly written and an experienced teacher/tutor will hopefully have a better chance of 'interpreting' for you.
However don't worry too much; the standards have dropped so much you will be studying little more than what was once 'O' level.:o
If you get the chance to do the 'further maths' GCSE paper, now that's proper Maths.
At least every single person who saw that paper this year, from the school's Head of Maths to the invigilators who were once maths teachers all thought so.:T

Do you mean further maths A Level or GCSE as I have already done the GCSE, lol
