I am a teacher and a member of a union.A few years ago I claimed a tax refund for union subscriptions.I assumed that once this was done I would get this tax back automatically but my code is still 489L. i WENT THROUGH AN AGENCY LAST TIME.cAN i WRITE TO THE TAX OFFICE AND GET THIS CHANGED AGAIN AND HOW DO i GO ABOUT IT? tHANKS! (sorry for capitals)

In the absence of a reply from any of the resident experts.
Do just what you said. Write [or ring] the tax office that deals with your tax affairs with your tax reference and/or NI no and explain it as you have above. If your union is allowed as a subscription to a professional body and it's almost certain it is, if you've had it before and haven't changed unions, then they will sort it out on your tax coding and you can claim back for up to 6 [I think] previous tax years.0 -

Job expenses:Flat rate job expenses: Professional subscriptions
You can claim an allowance for
money you have to pay out while you are working such as travel, but not the cost of getting to and from work
the flat rate allowance for the job agreed by the union – you do not have to be a member
annual subscriptions to professional bodies – these must be connected with your job and the professional body must be recognised by the Inland Revenue.0
