Ok......you know how there is usually a black/dark coloured 'line' down what I assume is the prawn's back?
Well what is it? Is it some sort of back 'bone', spinal cord stuff..........or poop?
We've been living off whatever was left in the freezer and I found a bag tucked away in the corner. There's loads of these black bits and I've just spent an hour cleaning them off. Please tell me it's not prawn poop (just in case I missed any)
Mind you.....if it is prawn poop...........I think I need to know. _pale_ Although prawn spinal cord worries me just as much if I'm honest. :undecided

I'm not sure which it is, but I was always taught to make sure it has been removed.0

ugh, I think I've just been put off prawns for life
I've never thought about what that black bit might be before!
Hurry up someone and tell us what it is please0 -
its the prawns digestive system, run a sharp knife either side and it should come away easy( easiier !!)0

Yeuch........that's where the poop originates isn't it? The digestive system? So all the yucky things the prawn has absorbed goes down it's digestive tract and turns into.......POOP!
I KNEW there was a good reason why I was so obsessed with the black bits. It takes me hours to make a prawn cocktail cos every black bit must be gone. This is a particularly bad bag for black bits.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Based on the fact that prawns live primarily on fish faeces and in fish-dpleated waters are often found around sewage outlets I would think that their digestive system is the least of your worries considering what the rest of the prawn's body is built out of:rotfl:
PS : Doesn't bother me, battered king prawns for dinner tonight:DPost Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

The vein is the intestine. Don't let it bother you it won't do you any harm if you dont remove every last bit.0

I used to have to shell hundreds of large raw prawns years ago when I worked in a kitchen and had to make sure there were no black bits!(or sometimes green!!!!) yeeuch .Luckily I never was much of a prawn eater but OH would eat them every day given half a chance.0
