Just in the process of and SAR to find out why they have recorded this default, but not holding out much hope.

If I can't get this default removed which banks give the best deals for doomed people with 1 unsatisfied default?

You should be able to get the default removed. The default date can be up to 6 months after the date of the actual default. If it is more than this then they are in breach of the Data Protection Act for holding and distributing incorrect data about you. I would write an official letter of complaint to both the DCA and CRA stating what is wrong and how you expect it to be rectified before you contact the ICO to report the breach of the DPA.

I think you would only be able to get credit from the sub-prime lenders with a poor credit rating or perhaps a credit union. The banks have been cutting right bacl on their lending and not showing much sign of changing this yet.

thank you, I have bypassed everyone and gone straight to the ICO and they suggested to get a SAR. Is this not the best way?

If you send the SAR to the co-op, it should provide you with the transaction details which will show what payments were made and when the date of default was. If the default date on your credit file is not within 6 months of this, then you have proof that they are in breach of the DPA and the ICO should do something about it. For now you could contact the credit reference agency to tell them this default is disputed.
