Generating electricity at home

Has anyone been down this route of microgeneration?

In a nutshell, I'd like an idea of how much I can generate given a certain amount of funding from me. For instance, I'm on certain "qualifying benefits" such as disability and income support, I live on a smallholding with four acres in a sunny, rural location in North Wales, I have a 55-metre deep borehole for water, and I'm keen to get free of crippling LPG and electricity costs.

By way of example, I may be lucky enough to get a windfall of around £1,500 later this year. If that's used alongside a grant, what kind of solar and/or wind generator might I be looking at? Things like underfloor heating are not an option as the cottage is around 200 years old.

I would appreciate any experiences, advice and recommendations. Thank you!

If you do a search in this section there are a number of posts from people with both solar and wind generator.

Without rehearsing all the arguments in those threads, I doubt if you will get anything remotely of 'interest' for much under £10,000.

I was searching the net for ideas along the same lines and came across a website (from a link in one of these forums) which claims to have details of a magnetic generator which works by perpetual motion. It sounds barmy but the You Tube clips and Sky News items sound quite convincing. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of Magniwork I wonder??? If it's not a con it's a great idea. As a new poster I cannot post the url but a google search for Magniwork will bring up quite a lot of info, including the official website.
  • Perpetual motion? Are you serious? Of course it doesn't work - I suggest you google for the laws of thermodynamics.

If two magnets are placed opposite poles together they push each other away. Very strongly. If that could be modified so that they kept spinning as part of repelling....................

Anyway every link to the thing mentioned by OP won't work for me. I have been attempting to invent one myself instead:rolleyes:

Edited to add, found this site which says it is old technology and it would sort of generate electricity but not really, or not enough

The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.
  • Hi Darkseid,

This site is worth looking at:

I'd post a question with them and see what they come up with.

I'd maybe ask about low tech options too given that you have a potential 4 acres you can use.

Agree you won't get much below £10k though.

It's a con. This cannot work. Why do you think people haven't scaled this up to replace all our power plants with clean energy from huge wheels powered by magnets? You cannot create energy, only transform it; hundreds of years of science have verified this rule and you'll need some serious amount of evidence if claims about this thing working are to be taken seriously.

    What about this? http://www.heatpumps.co.uk/

I've no idea of the cost (too thick to do the sums! :rotfl:) but I've always thought these are the way to go.

If I had your land and opportunity I would certainly look at it.
