House old bills when I've given keys to bank

I'm moving into a rented house at weekend and on monday phoning the bank to say repossess my house, where shall I send the keys.

Once I've done this I am still liable for all the household bills that I had to pay before like council tax, water rates and house insurance.
i'm going to phone gas & Electric with metre readings asking them to switch off.

I'm staying in the same area and will have to pay council tax on my rented house, so the council will know where I am, can they send balifs to that property?

Cheers

    Hi,
If you want to give the keys back thats up to you but DONT SIGN ANYTHING.You will be liable for all the bills you mentioned until the date you leave. Inform the council that the house is empty and it will then be exempt from c/tax for 6 months.

Bailiffs can turn up and take goods from anywhere ( no bailiffs unless you have been taken to court and not done as the court said ) If you get bailiffs then keep the doors and windows locked and dont let them in.

I pressume you are going BR ? When you do all debts you mentioned will be written off including any mortgage shortfall.

Yes it makes no difference when you go BR. The mort shortfall will be included even if the property isnt sold until after you are discharged- but make sure you do not sign anything for your lender- there is no reason why you just cant walk away and forget the property - I would.

  • Just to mention that I am currently having water and electricity suppliers problems. It was all turned off and they were informed when I did vol repo, but the flat has now been sold and clearly new owners are using the amenities.

Recommend get it all down to them in writing, which i didn't and would dearly like to be able to point to a letter or email now, rather than a phone conversation.

Regarding council tax, once the mortgage company repossessed the property went to a code "L" which means that there is not council tax payable. I had plenty of problems before repossession as I had moved out and they would only give me 6 months unoccupancy then I had to start paying again - but once the BS repossessed all the council tax problems just melted away.

plus i will do everything in writing
thanks for you help guys it really means something!
  • You'll be fine Curlybabe - I too did the selling on ebay and Amazon and thought I was doing quite well there, not understanding where my money was going - until I did a proper profit and loss account and found the expenses - not just the buying of the stock, but transportation, parking, postage, stationary, etc was horrendous.

Yes, do walk away from it all, but please stay on this board as we're here to help xxx

I am planing on staying around - I have my husband for support but its nice to speak to others who's done it as at least I know we are the only people who's go in throught it.

I've told everyone family and friends because when its in the paper I didn't want people lauging and pointing but everyone has been lovely.

Sounds strange I'm excited about my new life and meeting new friends on here

    take care
  • Everyone was lovely to me and supportive, even one friend who is totally loaded.

You sound as if you are doing well, Curlyxxx
