closing a Next account

Options
Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but figured this was the shopping section.

I recently did a credit check and found I had a Next directory account that must have been opened ages ago when I ordered a directory that I don't want/need.

I rang Next to try to close the account and was told that
a) I need to close the account in writing with my customer number (which of course I don't know as I was unaware the account even existed)
b) that they could send me my customer number but only to the address on the system, which is an old address as we have moved.
c) my account has never been active so is essentially "closed" but could be activated again should I wish to purchase something.

Can I permanently close the account so I am removed from thier system?
Do closed accounts continue to appear on your credit check?

I am moving overseas in a couple of months so am trying to sort everything out now and don't want to leave "credit" haning about in the UK.

Any help much appreciated.

i would put everything in writing ,they dont need an account number they will be able to find your details by using your old postcode. tell them you want written confirmation this has been done.
This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com
  • Sounds like they're telling you a load of rubbish! I had a Next account and bought 1 thing about 2 years previously. I called up to close the account (I guess i must have had my customer number as I probably found the number on the top of an old statement) and they closed it over the phone in 5 minutes.

Yep, my wife recently closed an account over the phone in 5 minutes.

They had opened it for her after entering a competition in-store despite her saying that she didn't require an account as we already have one (enter roll eyes smiley here).
