Maternity cover jobs

I have found another position of interest which I am completely qualified for and would be a brilliant experience.
The problem is it is maternity cover and therefore only 9 months.
Are maternity jobs worth the risk of being unemployeed at the end of the time especailly in the current world job problems?
I have a full time permenant job but it just bores me to tears! But I also have a mortgage and everday life commitments to met. I have savings but only enough to cover me for around 3 months without a wage.
So are maternity posts worth the gamble or not?
