Hi,
I have moved down to Brighton from London about 2 months ago and since then trying desperately to find a job.But it seems impossible. It's such a small city and so few jobs advertised. Now am starting thinking about going back to London as there's so much more out there..Moved here for personal reasons and also to have a break from London. Please can anyone from Brighton advice what to do , where to go? Thank you.
P.S I am not getting JSA as I left my previous job to move down here:(

Could you commute to London just like thousands of Brightonians do every day? There is a Brighton to Victoria service which takes under an hour, and if you get a folding bike perhaps you could go from home to office in just over an hour? With some jobs you might even be able to work from home some of the time.
When I lived in Brighton I had a 3 hour round trip by bike and train which was just about bearable, although if there was a problem with the train line it could turn into a hassle. I read the newspaper every morning and a book in the evening and stayed well read, these days with iPods, netbooks, dongles, podcasts and iPlayer etc a commute by train has a lot more entertainment options.0 -

Yep, second what paulwf says, there is a very good train service between London and Brighton and it doesn't take that long - well it didn't when I lived in Brighton and worked in London and the Gatwick Express now does London to Brighton - ok a bit expensive but useful if you need to.Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free

What are you trying to get a job in ?
Anything really - office jobs, admin, that sort of stuff
To others - I wouldn't really like to commute as it means spending most of the time in London again and this is exactly what don't want to do..plus of course a job needs to be well paid for commuting to be worth doing it..0 -

My view was that working/commuting full time 5 days a week then having 2 wonderful days off by the seaside was far better than living in London. You've said you are thinking of moving back to London, but with commuting you get the best of both worlds. Although still a chunk a monthly season ticket is a lot lower than daily train fares.0 -
the montly season ticket is going to be expensive and the jobs for admin etc dont pay that much
is there no bar work at the moment now summer is here0 -

Probably not much: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8121560.stm
I remember seeing this on the local TV news, really depressing stuff.
Sorry
On a practical note are there any other seaside towns nearby you could live in which are less costly? I live in Hastings (50ish miles away) and rents here are still less than those in Brighton 9 years ago! And I pay less than half now what I used to pay for a haircut. Brighton is central London prices in many ways, getting by on something like bar work is going to be hard.
BTW I know places like Hastings don't have the same buzz, the job market is poor and the links to London aren't as good. I'm just trying to think with my MSE hat on...with a flatshare you could get by on a normal retail job, it'll be so much harder in Brighton. Loads of ex-Londoners live around here, London is great for 10 years then it is nice to live somewhere smaller, cheaper and more laid back.0 -
