  • This is not going to be good for my recently developed obsession with buying new specs! Already cleared out Glasses Direct so I'll give these guys a go too...

    Thanks OP!

Freebie Manor was the name on the Plaque my mum gave me for first home which was equiped with freebie banded cups, teapot, coffee pot oh and a sofa which cost a bottle of Vodka. My motto's are don't ask dont get, and don't buy if they say no.

I've used selectspecs twice, and have had problems both times.

First time, the glasses didn't arrive. I was told I would have to wait 28 days before they'd officially consider the glasses missing. When I phoned them up to complain, they told me I'd have to send them a letter in writing confirming the glasses hadn't arrived, for "legal reasons". I wasn't too happy at this as it meant buying a stamp, envelope and paper etc, and added to the cost of the glasses. When I told them I wasn't happy, they effectively accused me of FRAUD, and suggested or implied that I HAD received the glasses and was just lying to them!! They backtracked a bit when I pointed out that I considered that suggestion to be libellous! After many emails and a letter, I finally received my glasses, plus 30 pence in cash for the stamp. Hardly compensation for the poor service I'd received.

A year or so later, I had calmed down, and decided it was probably just a one-off poor service, and probably just the fault of Royal Mail. So, I decided to place another order with selectspecs, this time for some sunglasses and glasses. Once again, they managed to muck up my order. The tinted sunglasses game untinted, and if I recall they tinted the untinted pair! Their customer service was still fairly poor, and they originally wanted me to return the glasses to them AT MY OWN EXPENSE. I insisted that they refund me at least the cost of return postage, which they eventually did. The only compensation I got for their error was a free "cleaning kit", which is basically a cleaning fluid worth around a pound. Eventually the correct glasses were sent out.

All in all, they do deliver EVENTUALLY, but in my experience not without a lot of hassle. If things go wrong (which it seems they do), don't expect any offers of compensation! I guess you get what you pay for.

If you want a hassle-free service, avoid!!!
What shall I put here?

I can't use selectspecs due to my higher prescription but received my order from Zenni Optical yesterday (second pair ordered in two years) and they're very good. I like Zenni as you get thinner lenses, anti scratch and UV protection. They start at $8 complete with $9.00 delivery by DHL so about £9.50. It took 10 working days to get the order. https://zennioptical.com

Do Zenni ship to the UK now? The only option for shipping I could see was US Post, ok if you are in the USA I guess, a problem anywhere else in the world.

What is your prescription? You can always click on the upgrade option for more prescription options and thinner lenses. :)

I ordered 1 pair of the £5 glasses for reading. Communication was good, & order arrived fairly quickly, considering it was from Hong Kong. However, quality of the frames is poor, there is a fault at one of the hinges which means they are wearable (until it breaks) but not pretty. I e-mailed them to discuss, which then involved lots of toing & froing with me having to send them photos of the fault. Although the fault was obvious from the photo, they now want me to send them back to them, at my own expense, which I don't really want to do. I have asked for them to either pay the postage, or just send a replacement - & heard no more from them. So I'll be back to Zenni next time (who incidentally, do post to the UK).
I suppose they were only cheap, so what did I expect.......

Sorry I missed this...yes they post to the UK. When you are going through the check out process and have added your shipping address, a higher rate of $9 will appear for the shipping.

My prescription is -9.00. Zenni are one of the few online glasses makers who will deal with such a poor prescription. I only wear my glasses once a month for an evening/morning when resting my eyes from continuous wear lenses so I just went with the standard deal.
