Advice on default

Hi, i wonder if anyone can help. 2 months ago i finished paying off a debt of £1500 that i defaulted on last year. I need to know how long i should wait before applying for a loan for a new car. i did apply last week but was declined. I know its on my record for 6 years but i thought after 6-12 months provided i keep my nose clean i should then be back in mainstream credit? is this right? I already have a capital one credit card i spend £100 a month and pay it off straight away to try and rebuild my worthiness. my only other debt is my £1500 overdraft that i never exceed, nor do i have any other debts on my file (i have checked). im on a relatively good salary (23k)..on the electrol role, same job and address for years etc i just need to know whether i should be ok if i leave it 6-12 months? thank you.
