I've bought citric acid from the pharmacy in Tesco without any problems ;)
You must live in a "nice" area, none of our chemists stock it and the health food shop we found it in kept it under the counter, rather than on the shelves, only those who ask can get it and only those she wants back in her shop will she serve.

Many Asian supermarkets sell Citric Acid. I have to stock up when I go to visit my mum as I can take a detour to the Soho Road in Handsworth, Birmingham

I think you are correct because I have used tartaric acid in my cordial which I can easily buy from my local chemist.

Iv'e made elderflower champagne before and you don't need citric or taratric acid and it's not alcoholic either. Iv'e got recipe somewhere. Let me know if anyone wants it and i'll look it out.
It is unwise to pay too much but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, all you lose is a little money... that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot...it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better (John Ruskin - 19 ctry author, art critic & social reformer)
