Proof of right to work in UK

Options
I am a british citizen and my 10 year passport expired last year - I am not intending of traveling overseas for the forseable future and therefore have not paid the £70 or whatever to renew it

Even though it expired last week it shows that i am british nationality and that i was born in this country

am i correct that its not valid as it is out of date even though it does show what my nationalty is etc

is the only other alternative route getting birth certificate.

I was under the impression that passports are still valid documents in themselves even if they are expired. you are not supposed to destory old passports (as this show your previous movements, and possibly still have active visas).

so you should be able to use it as proof of nationality

If you look at lists provided by various institutions (eg banks, universities) regarding proof of ID, some use the phrase "valid passport" and others "current passport".

Certainly those who use the word "current" would not accept an expired passport. However the interpretation of "valid" is not clear.

However I believe that the official list regarding "right to work" includes a " national passport or national identity card showing that you are a national of a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland" without referring to it being current. So a UK passport falls into that category.

Not sure if they're even issued nowadays (I've had mine for 20+ years) but wouldn't a National Insurance card suffice?

back last year all employees where i have worked for the last 10 years were asked to provide passports as eligibility to work in the UK - i dont have a passport my last one expired 18 years ago and as i hate areoplanes have no intention of getting another!! eventually my company agreed to me producing my photo driving licence, counterpart and birth certificate... there are ways around this situation.

British people should never have been put in this awkward situation anyway.

Someone, like your employer, out of the blue saying prove you are British.
Your employer of course will say we have to be fair & do this to everyone.

It's like sifting anyone & everyone because of the immigration mess this country has got into.

i work for a large company - and 40+ members of staff were found to be not illegible to work in the uk - and had their employment terminated (some had been working for many years and paying tax an ni) companys have to ask everyone - thay cant just pick who they ask!

I'm not sure this is retrospective, that British people already employed, possibly for many years, have to prove anything.

HR/Personnel are just covering their !!!!!! thinking we'll just ask everyone.

What's wrong them with targetting people (foreigners) & saying we want you to prove you have right to work here.

They're just too scared, because of that they target everyone, which is wrong.

I've got no problem with all new employees being checked including Brits, but not blanket checks on all old employees, as if we all should be treated as illegals.
