Sharp Strawberries

I have bought lots of strawberries from all kinds of supermarkets this summer hoping to find some sweet ones. They are all so sharp and nothing like the strawberries I used to remember. I have even bought English organic but to no avail.
Now I have a large punnet sitting in my fridge, what can I do with them apart from sprinkling them with sugar? I would like to bake something but we have egg allergies in this house so if anyone has an egg free cake recipe that would be great.
Thanks Maro

Hi maro,
You could make an egg free cake and use the strawberries with cream as a filling. There are lots more ideas on this thread:
What to do with a glut of strawberries?
I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

Make a shortbread round - no eggs :-) then serve with the strawberries on top.
Should be a nice combination of sweet and sharp.0 -
Oooh I stick them in a blender with half a glass of milk.....

Try sprinkling them with orange juice, or cooking them with rhubarb.
And if you want delicious sweet strawberries, try your local farm shop, farmers' market, PYO or stall in a layby. They won't last more than 24 hours, but they'll be sweet, juicy and delicious (and you'll probably eat them all before they go off!). I've had delicious strawberries ever since I abandoned the supermarket ones and started buying ones that had ripened in the sun and been picked only hours (or even minutes) before.0 -
Get some strawberry plants for the garden. Alpine strawbs need no looking after - they grow like weeds and the flavour is amazing.
As for the punnet in the fridge - smoothies? Or buy a sweet pastry case, arrange the strawberries in it and make a Quick-Jel to put over the top. Serve with cream. Delicious.0 -
Thanks for all the suggestions. I live in central London and have no garden so no chance to pick my own or grow my own. I like the flan idea so will probably do that.
thanks for the egg free cake recipes, my daughters birthday is next week so will make her a cake. Made one last year it was awful, followed internet recipe, not sure what went wrong!!0 -
What about a strawberry shortcake? It is just a big scone cut in half, filled with cream and strawberries.
A good idea for an egg-free birthday cake is a rice crispie cake mountain. Make lots of rice crispie cakes, it looks good if you do some with white chocolate and some with dark chocolate. When they are set pile them on a platter in a heap and stick the candle holders in (sparklers look really great). You might need to melt them at the edges a bit to make the mountain more stable. Your child can then break off a piece for each guest.
By the way you can make muffins very sucessfully without the egg. Simply replce one egg with 3-4 tbsp of milk-works brilliantly;)0
