Compo Claims

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/8139340.stm

Are compo claims in Northern Ireland getting rediculous? bloody right they are.. especially with the fact that the solicitors are actually making more than the claimants.... Absolulty scandalous..

if what the article says is true
"A moderately severe ankle injury would produce NI compensation of £18,000 as opposed to £7,625 in England and Wales."

Are we getting worse than the Yanks?? if in doubt..... make a claim...

I'm not saying you shouldn't make a claim if it is genuinly somebody elses fault but it seems nowadays it's always somebody elses fault. People do not take any accountablility for their own actions..

Now if your walking down the street and trip on a slighlty raisd kerb is that really the councils fault???? should you not have been looking where you are going??? I know not always straight forward but should it mean you can claim for £18,000???

I think with a lot of local authorities & places of work it doesn't help that most places seem to have a policy of denying all liability for everything until they are taken to court. why can't they just investigate claims and pay up if it is possibly their fault... would save a fortune in solicitor fees...

Example
My Mother in law had a situaton where a council big steel eurobin hit her car within hours of the council emptying it... obviously hadn't put the brake on again... council denied all responsibility and after a year of legal rangling they eventually had to cough up and pay all fees too... I mean it was so obviously the bin mans mistake but why did they deny everything... so essentially what would have been a few 100 pound claim ended up in 1000's... Madness

if you think Solicitors over here have it good with their fees, you should see what those in England and Wales get...I once settled a whiplash claim for £1k, and the Solicitors produced a bill for £10k!!! which then had to be negotiated right down. At least over here the Solicitors work to a scale.

think your getting the wrong end of the stick on my example. My point there was it wasn't her fault and a matter of a few hundred pounds ended up costing the coucil thousands as they wouldn't admit any responsibility. If it was her fault.. in that she crashed intothe bin or something.. that would have been her fault so she should have coughed up for repairs...

Maybe I didn't type the thread very well to start as I was a but disgusted and on a bit of a rant.... my big issue is with the amount that solicitors get.... it's rediculous..... I just think people should take more responsibility for their own actions be it individuals, local authorities & other places of work, everyone would end up paying out less in the long run.....

i am waiting on a claim to be settled and i hope its a decent enough amount. I've never claimed for anything before in my life. i was hit from behind in my car whilst stopped and hurt my shoulder as well as now being the worst passenger you would imagine! i debated about claiming, why not, i had a genuine injury.
