Emergency tax expiry

in Cutting tax
Hi,
Can anyone tell me if overpaid tax from your wages expires after so long without claiming. I worked with a company, then worked abroad, then when rejoining the British company they put me on the emergency tax code.
My girlfriend at the time was in the same situ, called the tax office and within 3 weeks had the 1k she had overpaid in a cheque :j, however i had to fill out more forms as i had been working abroad around this time. I sent the forms 3 times but still they claimed they hadnt received them, so eventually, and stupidly (i was young!) let it go on for far too long.
I would have to look back on my own payslips, but i'm sure this could have been 5 or 6 years ago now:silenced:_pale_.
I am just going through the hardship route for reclaiming bank charges, and hopefully someone can help me out with this one as times are tough!
Thanks
