Haggling with high street stores?

Options
Does anyone haggle with big name high street stores?

You see a TV online at Comet, for expample costing £399 and the same TV is in one of it's compettitors high street stores (maybe Currys) for the same price.

Has anyone gone into the same high street store, said that they have seen the same product cheaper elsewhere and gotten any money knocked off?

If so where, how much and what did you say to get the discount?

Yes, Staples is very good at doing this.
I needed to buy the Norton Anti Virus 2009 for my laptop and had currently seen it at PC World on offer at £29.99 (normal cost is usually £40 upwards).
Sadly I did not get it at the time, and later on in the week went to Staples, who had the same software at full price. I mentioned very nicely that I had seen it cheaper at PC World, and was wondering if they could match the price. The lovely man did a price check, and said it was fine by the manager and that they often match the price.
I also got £5.00 discount for buying it off them.

You can do this with the more expensive goods there, so it's not just the cheaper priced items.

Not sure if you would consider Staples 'big', but I'm pretty sure I recall my parents saying that PC World used to do the same. Not sure if this still applies these days though.

    It never hurts to ask.

Basically, decide what you would be happy paying and just ask them, nicely, if there is any way they could stetch to doing a discount. If you like, just be straight, tell them what you are happy to spend.

At worst they can say no, and you go elsewhere.

However, if you do haggle but they refuse to do a deal, it's bad practice to say "oh well" and then just pay the full price. It comes across like you are trying it on!

Another suggestion, with small busninesses, is to e mail them asking if they might be interested in doing you an offer/deal. E Mailing gives you a bit of authority- the onus is on them to offer you a good enough deal so that you choose to go to their shop. For example- a bike shop.
