It won't let me extend the C: Drive?

My C Drive is pretty much full (it's got 970mb out of 30gb left) whereas my D drive is only half full (that's got 57gb out of 117gb left) I was trying to shrink the D drive and then extend the C drive using the computer management thingy but it won't give me the option to extend the C drive?

It's a fujitsu siemans esprimo v5535. I've got Vista Home Basic, the RAM is 1.00gb and the system type is 32-bit operating system. I don't know what all that means but I didn't know whether you needed that info or not.

If I was to transfer all the data off the D drive on to my external hardrive and then delete the D drive, would that be a good idea?

You'd need a specialist partition manager software tool to do this, you can't just change the partition size with Windows as C is the system disc and cannot be altered whilst running. Software such as Partition Magic / Manager: http://www.paragon-software.com will allow dynamic changes.

There maybe free/open source tools too, someone will be along in a minute with a recommendation!

The old school route is to back everything up from both C and D, delete both partitions (with a boot disk), and then re partition, or just setup one main partition as a C drive, filling the max space allowed, then reinstall windows and all your files.

The freeware partition manager software is called 'gparted'.
You have to download the file and burn it to a CD.
Then you boot from the CD, before Windows can load, then alter the partitions.
You can get it from here:-http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

But I'm not sure that it's a good idea to be doing this, sometimes that D partition contains your original XP so that you can do a 'restore to factory settings'.

I might be wrong, but check up on it before you start messing with the partitions.

Why not just move the files from c to d (Photos, videos, music etc)

If you have not done it already, download and run CCleaner. You will be surprised at the space it frees up.

I've run the ccleaner and i've now got 1.16gb free on the c drive so it hasn't made that much difference unfortunately.

All my music/videos/documents etc are on the d drive.

I just don't know what else I can delete to get more space. So it looks like the only thing I can do is shrink the d drive and extend the c drive. Thanks bat999, i'll have a look at that software.

There is an extra partition on my computer that showed up on the computer management thingy, could that possibly have the recovery stuff on? I won't touch that at all.

Lower the RESTORE POINTS maximum size

What have you got on c drive thats taking up so much space? If its games or whatever then simply uninstall them and reinstall on d drive

Probably loads of Windows patch installers: in C:\Windows

Shown in blue with names like: $NtUninstallKBxxxxxx$

It is safe to remove most of these (providing to don't want to uninstall Windows patches at a later date), but never delete $hf_mig$
