How do I get my house valued?

Firstly apologies if this is a stupid question or has been answered before (I did a search but couldn't find anything that specifically answered this)
Our fixed rate is due to end in October, and I would very much like to get onto another fixed rate but understand this could be hard if we don't have enough LTV due to the drop in house prices. However, how do I find out what my house is worth now? Do I get an estate agent round - if so do I need to pay for this?
Any advice would be gratefully received! Thanks

For a very general guide you could use this tool:
http://www.nationwide.co.uk/hpi/calculator.asp
Most estate agents will value a house for free if you tell them you're thinking about selling.
Or you could ring your lender and ask them if they have an estimated value on their system at the moment.
Or see what properties have sold for locally - www.rightmove.co.uk contains this information.0 -
Thanks Opinions4u - is the nationwide calculator the kind of thing they would use to estimate the value if you rang them up (our mortgage is with nationwide at the moment)?0
