Whats best?

I'm trying to save as much money as possible with my weekly food shop, but obviously without having to skimp on the quality of the food.

Where is the best supermarket for this?

I usually shop at tesco, but its becoming pricier every week.

I was just wondering if anyone here shops at morrisons or anywhere like Lidl, aldi, netto etc

And if so, what are they like?

Thank you

  • I think the key is to shop around. I shop at Sainsburys for the main shop (basics), local market, aldi for fruit and veg. Asian s/market for yoghurts, lentils, pulses and sometimes rice.

I spend around 250 quid a month on food and we eat really well, meals from scratch and home grown veg, home baked bread and cakes.

Why not do a price book where you write down the lowest price for regular goods and then when you are out and about and spot a bargain then check against your book.

I think you have to regularly review your shopping habits, supermarkets are clever at spotting a trend (hence loyalty cards) and use the info to target customers. I am not a loyal shopper, I shop around a lot wherever I can find a good price.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the advice.! Really helpful.!

I'll have to have a look around and see if there are any local markets etc around. I live in the city centre and dont drive - so i also need to weigh up the price of public transport to get to certain places too.!

Shopping around is the best way to save money.
I buy meat and fresh fish at Sainsburys. They may appear to be more expensive, but the quality is very good so no waste.
Lidl for Olive spread, yogurts (if I am not making my own). Pasta, rice, fruit juices and sometimes fruit and veg.
Home Bargains for Stardrops, tissues and any other beauty products that they stock.
Tesco for bread, fruit and veg and other things that may be reduced.
    Eggs from the market.
Where I used to work, they had a local fruit and veg shop. I really miss this for both price and freshness.
And I generally keep my eyes open for bargains wherever I shop as O.P. said the shops get wise to your spending habbits!!!
  • I go to Tesco or morrisons for specific things eg when i want a particular brand, then Aldi for generic stuff, especially cheap fruit and veg and storecupboard things.

Morrisons is excellent for reduced fruit and veg too :)

also check out www.madaboutbargains.co.uk to see what's on special offer in your cupermarket of choice this week :)

I've tried most of the supermarkets as we have a good choice here in Stoke. But the only way I really save is to make a list and stick to it as much as possible. Do the meal plans and buy what you need.

I do bulk buy loo roll though as it's much cheaper to buy a massive pack.

I also live in a city centre and don't drive. I find Asda much cheaper than Tesco and there is almost always a free delivery code on this website, so I don't have to pay for a taxi home! Also on this website is a code for £10 off your first £50 Tesco online shop. You can use the MySupermarket website to choose the best bargains at each.

This is me too. Meal planning means I don't buy more than I need.
I had a nose around in Aldi the other day. The basics were the same price as Sainsbury's Basics range and I can get everything I want from Sainsbury (eg lentils, creme fraiche etc). We also found that stuff like Sainsbury's basics baked beans etc had far less salt in them than the Aldi equivalent so for me I'd rather shop as Sainsbury's. It's got far more going for it and the basics range is huge. Plus I can fast track so don't have to queue for hours :D

I always find if I go to Aldi I have to still go to one of the big ones to get the rest of the shopping after.
I couldn't find cornflour last time, or Oxos.

  • I have been being very geeky recently and making a spreadsheet of prices of things I regularly buy, to compare how much they are in the different supermarkets i visit. Morrisons is coming out well so far. :)
