Many charities have dedicated bookshops - or large book departments. Volunteering to sort and classify books would look good on your application, as might some paid work in a bookshop.

If this is a public sector job, tell them you are committed to Diversity and Inclusion.

    Too true.

Councils love words like equality and diversity, equal opps, policies and procedures, customer service skills , customer charter , being able to relate to people from of all ages, backgrounds and cultures and so on.

It's getting it all in that your a peoples person rather than the books.

I am a librarian and I think you need to stress customer service skills and IT skills. If it is a library in an urban area being able to deal with difficult situations/angry customers is important. The ability to manage your own time and use your initiative are also really important. If you do any kind of voluntary work put that down. We try to encourage our library assistants to get involved with things like Silver Surfer sessions or children's craft sessions so if you do anything that involves helping others put that down.

If you get an interview you will often be asked to do a filing test where you will be given a big pile of books and told to put them in order. It is amazing how many people fail this test!

I would actually love to do childrens craft sessions and anything like that! you would definately have me volunteering for things like that! I also put down about the mystery shopping I have been doing (thanks to this site!)

  • All filled in now just have to sit and hope! Thanks for the advice everyone its been very helpful!

Libraries are brilliant which is part of the reason I would love to work in one, without them I don't think I would have become the book lover I am today(low income family couldn't afford new books, especially at the rate i read them!) and I would be so happy if I could help other people aquire the same love of books I have!
