.....or you could do a carboot?

I would suggest doing this with a friend, so you aren't on your own, and can nip off to the loo if you need to! It's quite good fun, and can be very lucrative....as long as you don't spend all the cash you make ;)

But here I have a pile of clothes, books, bits and pieces, that I don't use anymore and *could* give away...but I am crippled by the fact that this pile is worth a certain amount of money. For example - designer clothing, or beautiful books etc...
Should I sell these to ease my conscience?

Do you NEED to shift them? If you have the space, why not hang on to them and sell them once you have relocated and have more time?
Or if it's lovely stuff that you'd regret selling... keep it :D
I might not be the best person for a declutter thread...

    Don't believe it!

I had a collection of 16 Charles Dickens books which a second hand book shop offered me £2 a book for.

I sold it on Ebay a week later for £160.

Taking and uploading a photo is hardly hassle. You don't even have to leave your house (other than to post the things!)

Well, I got £90 for a box of Dungeons & Dragons books that my ex left behind. :D

But the hassle with ebay, is if you're selling several items seperately, you have to photograph and list each item, package them when someone has won them, then go to the post office to post them where you'll probably have to queue. And then of course, ebay and paypal take their cut of the money.

I tried a dress agency several times when I down-shifted, because I also thought that would be a more respectful way to treat my originally expensive business and going-out attire. None of it ever sold! maybe the size was too small? But it ended up in the charity shop so it was a waste of effort after all.

If you're taking lots of designer clothes to a charity shop, it's worth making sure that you're taking it to a charity shop that will price it right and have the right sort of clients. I always take my good clothes to the Oxfam in our town, for example, as it has by far the best clothes. (I bought the shoes for my wedding from there - paid £40 for some stunning Vivienne Westwood shoes!)
