I always do my washing at night after my son has gone to bed. Then I fold them and leave them on the worktop (as I feel they are badly creased if I leave it in the machine) and hang out in the morning before I go to work.

I never leave them out overnight as I feel the dampness comes in later in the evening. In the temps we are having at the moment they should be dry in a good few hours. :D

If your washing line is out in all weathers remember to wipe the line before pegging anything on it!

When I was small I seem ro remember that people didn't hang their washing out on Sundays, I wonder why that was.. religious reasons maybe?

I have to admit to being more than a bit anal about my washing, I gasp with disbelief if I see my neighbour's washing out in the rain when I know full well she is in the house - how could she??? and I can't believe my eyes when she leaves it out overnight  I have to resist the urge to vault the fence and get it in before I go to sleep. I feel so bad for those poor poor clean and defenceless clothes left to the mercy of the weather/birds/robbers :(

I never leave out overnight (things don't dry then generally, people may steal the stuff, they are normally dry anyway).
I find nappies and towels are lovely and soft after being line dried.
I also keep an airer handy and anything not quite dry gets put in airing cupboard/on there. Also if clothes have a very slight dampness they can be easier to iron (if you iron at all that is lol!).
We don't own a tumble drier as they are a waste of money and energy imho.
Ditto washing the line before use.

Also with towels and probably nappies they dry stiff and scratchie. The lady who wrote the Tightwad Gazette also tumble dried her twins nappies for exactly this same reason.

i've dried many many nappies and towels outside over many years and never had any that were stiff and scratchy (that does happen if you dry them inside the house on radiators though but this can be gotten round by scrunching them up in your hands then rolling them a bit between your palms)

unless you live in an arrid windless place your nappies and towels will be fine. if you live in a very windy place your towels will be just as soft as they are from the drier as the wind tumbles them for you!

I love drying my clothes this way. Had a tumble dryer but hated it and gave it away. I use my washing machine over night because it saves money and washing is ready to hang out in the morning. Made a bad move today because I put it out when it was nice and sunny and then we had a thunderstorm but it's not the end of the World.

    Fantastic thread!

I'm a wooden peg person. I don't leave washing out overnight either. My mother would've said that was 'common'!! If I put a load on at night I take it out of the machine and fold it until I hang it out in the morning (saves on ironing or makes ironing easier as less creased - if I use the t/drier, then I fold clothes immediately it has finished for the same reason - I'm not super efficient nor fussy, just hate ironing!!)

I agree with giving the nappies a quick tumble if they are a bit crispy - but make sure they don't get too dry on the line first in this scenario.

I'm off work for two weeks and have been washing everything and hanging it out - smells so nice.

I live on a side of a hill and we very rarely get a still day and my towels wether windy or not come off the line rough and scratchy.

I have to confess to putting my washing out at 10pm some nights lol. I would rather have it out overnight and drying the next morning when I know I won't get chance to hang it out otherwise. Hubby parks his work van in the garden so it would make it harder for someone to come and rob my washing lol. I do try not to put my underwear on the line, the neighbours are a little odd lol so I dry them on the airer in the house usually.
Have fun getting used to the lovely fresh air for your clothes.
