Hi guys
Im 28 years old and a bit bored of working in my job at my desk each day.
I have a few friends who do practical jobs like plumbing and plastering and fancy learning a bit about them, maybe even with a view to becoming a plasterer myself.
I've done some research but am meeting deadends a bit with what qualifications are best and how to get into it etc.
The first thing I want to do is to spend a couple days with my friend to see whats involved then maybe persue the training.
Can you do evening courses to get qualifications as I couldnt give up work?
Thanks for any advice.
Si

I've just started entering the competitions (July 07). When I win I'll update this signature. Look on the bright side, I shouldn't have to update it very often.

Hi. I am a plasterer who has made a very good living in the trade. A friend of mine lost his job in a cable making firm almost three years ago and has never looked back. He persued the local job centre plus for a placement on a six month course and was immediately accepted. Once he finished the course he obtained an NVQ level 2 certificate which replaced the old Gity and Guilds many years ago.
Being a good friend I accepted him along to many jobs which I worked on, he was a little slow at the start but that was mainly because of a lack of experience. He continued to improve and now works for himself. He made quite good money but recently the ressesion has bitten but he still earns enough to get by.
There are courses for evening classes but probably would only give you the required basic skills without an NVQ. Should this be more up your street then go for it, you have nothing to lose. Once you get the basic skills there is nothing to stop you buying a few plasterboards and practising on those. Should you wish for more information plaese e mail. Depending on your location I may be able to help.

Hi, try your college and see if they have a train to gain department. If this would be your first NVQ you wouldn't have to pay either. My husband was going to do this with my dad, who is self employed in plastering and he was going to do a train to gain working with my dad 1 day a week. They can take around 18 months to complete though esp on a 1 day a week placement with a plasterer. You could still do your job while doing this then.0

Thanks for the advice guys.
I will be visiting my local job centre plus for some more info and hopefully spending a couple days with my friend on jobs. I live in Devon by the way!
Thank you
