Hi - I generally steer people away from lexmark products.

The use a highly-questionable technique called 'demo cartridges' which are only part-filled and run out very quickly (inkjets and lasers), but tend to sell the unit initally at a lower cost than compeditors.

You have to buy a new set (not so cheap now) very quickly - basically a variant of the old "give the rasor away, make money on the blades" scenario.

I recommend the Canon Inkjets with seperate ink tanks - they use optical sensors to tell you when each tank is getting low and are very cheap to replace too, unlike Lexmark.

I'd agree with the previous post.

It becomes important because it's much harder to get compatible (ie not manufacturer) cartridges than for say Epson or Canon. The same is true of Dell printers, cheap but the ink costs are sky high.

A while back, HP were doing the same trick, but seem to have got better now.

    Hang on !

DONT get a Canon the new ones cant use compatible inks so will be expensive to run, im a Canon fan and they are excellent printers but the new ones mean they are expensive to run as well, read the link below for info.

There are still plenty of Canon models available that you can get cheap cartridges for i.e. ip4000, ip5000, ip8500

Cartridges available at ukdvdr for 69p each ...... bargain

For info - I've got a Dell 720 (£9.99) a lexmark in disguise and I've managed to refill the trial pots for the last 18 months no probs. Thats 18 months of kids printing (quite a lot) for just about £15 plus paper !!!

    Not bad eh?

    Halifax,
I have same printer, can you please tell me how I go about purchasing ink and how easy to fill up they are (step by step if you could please).

Purchase the ink refill kits from Tesco/PCWorld/etc etc. They have detailed instructions (with pictures) on how to fill each type of cartridge that can be refilled and they have all the bits you need to do it.

Just thinking that if the printers are £20 each, buy three or four of them. They're still probably cheaper than the original cartridges.
Use the refill kits and if the printer get's messed up so what, just go onto the next.

Probably a viable financial option for home users.

Disposable printers - where the ink lasts longer than the printer.
    Good old quality Lexmark.

Thing I have found with Lexmark is the print quality from some of their models is excellent, when compared with my Epson C86 it has the upper hand but running costs are astronomical.

Dont rate Epson now either, had to have this printer replaced after 6 months and they issued a refurbished one :( Not perfect by any means, and most compatible ink cartriges are cheap but not great, blacks are OK but colours can vary.
