Graduation Ceremony

Hello, Has anyone been to a graduation ceremony recently.? I have absolutely no idea what to wear. I don't want to look out of place. We are also meeting son's girlfriends parents for the first time. I am female by the way. Ceremony is on 13th July.

Hiya, I went to one a year or so ago. I would ware a light strappy sun dress with flowers or pattern on and a plain summer colour jacket.

ps. just a tip... I would also put tissues in your bag for the toilet as with sooo....many people they run out.

Take the camera and flat shoes as there is a lot of standing around.

We also went to a side hall and was given sparkling wine and shortbread, then strawberries and cream.Free.

It was a lovely day. In the evening we attended a party at our student daughters rented house and the girls put on a buffet for all the (girls in the house_ parents to meet each other).
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.

Yeah, I would suggest looking smart and nice but not overly formal, so a summery dress or nice top and skirt maybe? Basically just don't show up in jeans and a T-shirt

I'd plan to wear something like you'd wear to a summer wedding. Nice dress, jacket, nice shoes.

  • I'm graduating on the 15th and my mum is wearing a green, white and brown dress and green shoes, and taking a white faux fur wrap in case it gets cold - a simplified version of the outfit she wore for my sister's wedding in December. So whoever said 'what you'd wear to a summer wedding' was pretty much on the money.

If you're not a dressy person though a trouser suit in non-worky colours (so basically not black or grey) with a nice top would be OK as well. Flat shoes are also good as from my memories of my sisters' graduations we were standing around all day for photos, waiting for my sisters to come out of the hall etc.

I agree with PPs re wedding type outfit (but hat is not necessary). For both ds1 and dd's graduations I wore a dress and jacket that would be suitable for a summer wedding. You will probably be given the option of having a family portrait photo done of you - so something that will look good alongside your son in his gown is nice.

Btw - one tip for your son - he will probably be told he should wear a white shirt with a tie. Get him to find out what colour his hood will be and choose a suitable colour tie. By pure chance my ds wore a navy blue tie and his hood was blue so the official photos (which cost a fortune if you decide to buy them) looked great. My dd's course had orange hoods and several young men were wearing red ties which clashed horribly!

Sorry for the delay in replying minerva-windsong and Nenen, I have been away for a few days, staying with my Mum and shopping. I have chosen a beautiful silk tunic in bright summery colours and black trousers. Thank you so much for the tip on tie colours. I have just done a google search and his colours are black and blue/green. So probably tie shopping at the weekend.
