In the case of Finucane and Nelson, who were defense solicitors before they died, what law or status now allows them to be classified as human rights solicitors? The sceptic might think this is simply publicity. Is a defense solicitor allowed to be called a human rights solicitor?

The fact is that defence solicitors in NI and elsewhere have resorted to taking cases to the European Court of Human Rights where they feel the law in the state does not protect their client's rights. One example I can think of immediately is a case that was taken to challenge the change to the right of an accused to remain silent. Because of the way the British legal system works where case law sets precedents for future decisions rather than there being a statute for every crime the only way to challenge some things is to take a test case to the ECHR after all internal appeals have been exhausted. I've read that Nelson intended to bring a case about the Robert Hamill murder and it may be that Finucane also used the ECHR to seek justice for a client. Civil law remedies are increasingly used where the criminal law can't provide a remedy - judicial review is now regularly used by criminal lawyers.

In the final analysis I don't actually think it matters what type of lawyer someone is - surely their murder is just as wrong either way?

A man arrested following an attack on a Belfast church is the son of a leading QC, the BBC has learned.

Hopefully, as Queens said about those rioting in the Holy Land those bringing the Uni into disrepute will be barred/expelled (although when quizzed by the media they haven't done that to anyone in the last few years)....this "rogue" doesn't deserve to be taking up a valuable place that could have been offered to someone else with greater regard for the Law they wish to practice. I think the Law Society look less favourably on those students with fraud type convictions so he may still get through (with mum and dads credentials)...which sadly should NOT be the case...a conviction....out he goes....mind you was there not a case recently where a (student) doctor got a really mild sentence for killing an innocent young lad coming out of a club?...I think he punched him for no reason at all....looking at the Judge and this student (lawyer) taking into account all the recent adverse publicity about "naughty" lawyers and the innefectiveness of the high profile cases by the PPS, you would think the profession in Northern Ireland is going to the dogs.....

yet another sad day for us who at some time or other may need their help

Do you think this law student was trying to get loyalists blamed for attacking the church? I can't think he would have done it for any other reason and it makes you wonder if similar tactics was used in the past.

I think this is probably attributing a bit too much rationality to things. My guess is he was drunk and thought it would be a bit of a jape. Not so much as it turns out :)
