Cardboard boxes.

We are moving soon and I am looking for a source of good strong cardboard boxes (preferably free). They seem to have all disappeared from the front of supermarkets but money is going to be more than tight when we move so need something. I tried buying some from Staples but they were very flimsy. Any advice appreciated.

Ask at your local supermarkets for their empty banana boxes. They're strong, have lids and carry handles and stack well.

As long as theres no creepy crawlies in them that sounds like a grand idea.

Ask them if they have any in the warehouse. In my supermarket they are collapsed and put straight into the bailer. But if you ask the right person they will go and take some out for you. You will need to tape them back together again.

I believe Argos sell packs of packing boxes, based on how many rooms in a house? (From memory, I don't believe they were as economical as "free" but handy to know about if push comes to shove)

You could also try posting in the I Wanna board and see if anyone else has any good ideas?

Best of luck with the move :):):)

Staples is another good one but you need to check when will be the best time at the store nearest to you. They're good quality as they've been used to carry office furniture, PC's, reams of paper and other heavy or expensive stuff.

My OH works in a record shop, the boxes they get arent very big, but have to be strong,as boxes of cd's and dvd's are heavy. might be worth asking around your local music/dvd stores. Good luck with the move.

Know anyone who works in an office? I get boxes from the photocopying room at the school i work at if i'm struggling. They are not overly big, as they usually hold 5 packs of A4 paper, but are good as they have a lod and stack well. Suitable for small items.

I'd also try some of your small local shops. If you pop in they will probably be grateful to have less rubbish to get rid of.

I got some good strong boxes for moving from my local ironmonger, so if you've got one nearby, it might be worth asking there

also, if a shop says they've none, ask when they will be likely to have some. it's amazing the number of sales assistants who don't think to offer that information

    good luck :)

    Hello,
I live in Glasgow and near us is a big packaging firm. They give away hundreds of end of line or misprinted boxes to those who are in the know and ask politely. We moved house recently and it was a godsend. Try the yellow pages for packaging firms near you and ask politely - you never know!
