debt collectors to my daughter

Hello,
My daughter is one of 5 students in a house. They gave all £60 to one student to pay water rates who had name as person responsible. Water board added my daughters name when she phoned up to check that they had been paid. Part had & rest was on standing order which the fellow student cancelled. That student ignored all letters from water board and debt was sold on. My daughter has a letter from debt collectors as her name was on the water board forms. Debt is now £550.
My daughter and two others are willing to pay their share of new debt (another £60 each).
Really worried and not sure of best way to go ahead.

unfortunately in these cases, the bills are normally joint and will be looked on in the same way by landlord and the utility company (they will chase whoevers name is on the bill)

I think in this instance they will have to pay, chase the other student in the flat or get a new tenant to share!!

Sorry to be bearer of bad news

    Back up a second.
So they all paid money to student X as the designated person to pay the water bill?
If the bill then hasn't been settled, student X must still have their money.
Or am I missing something? Why is this a new debt?

    Sorry,
    badly explained.
£300 initial bill. Responsible student collected money and only paid £60.
    Hid letters from other students.
New bill of £255 for water rates Noone new about this as student responsible kept letters and debt bought by collectors.
    Total £555 wanted by collectors.
Only three students left, my daughter is one.
They are willing to pay their share of new bill.(£180)
Other students including dishonest one uncontactable.
The tenancy finishes Saturday and the rest have gone away.
Will the debt collection agency accept offer from three students left?
How much might they have paid for the debt?
