Delta-NC That's exactly why we had to buy him some cloth's as you have explaned. The pair of jeans he had were going through at the knees and he could not possibly go to an interview like that.He too has a couple of T-shirts a shirt and a pair of jeans a couple of pair of shorts[Thank God it's summer]

Your right about the job centre they don't give two hoots about the young one's that go in there. But if Delboy24 would like to share his secret of how to get by on £45 a week please do

Annie123 Hi He is looking at the possibility of going back to college in September. At present he has sent off around a dozen application forms to the various company's that he is trained for unfortunately he rarely gets a reply but he has had 2 interviews which he was unsuccessful due to the sheer volume of people who applied and where more experienced than he.
    .

He has done well to get 2 interviews.
Last year I earned 30k plus, in April this year I finally got a job, 16 hours a week @£6 ph, no its not enough to live on but better than nothing.
Where I work there is another position for the same job (they want 3 people to do a job share basically) and so far we have had 156 applications thats since last Thursday, so I know its tough out there, and more so in the building trade and especially for the young, so I strongly advise you make sure he goes back to college, he maybe eligible for the adult leaning grant. good luck

Red Devil. yeh i just asked him if he knew about the grant for clothes for interviews. He did but has not bothered asking.
Annie123, It looks like he will be going back to college in September as there is just so few jobs out there. I think it's boredom that's making him go back as he did a 2 year bricklaying course from 16 to 18 and applied to dozens of building/construction companies and the one's that bothered to reply was told in not so many words sorry no experience. He said out of all the lads who were on the course around 20 at the time only one that he knows of got a job in construction.

The grants for clothing, as with everything else, is extremely difficult to get hold of. I expect it'll be similar the "Work Trials" where you have to be guaranteed the job before you can access them.

One of the few things I found interesting at university was the phrase "You get what you measure". Set targets and your employees will work to meet the targets, that doesn't necessarily mean they will do their job properly!

That clothing for interviews only from the J/C isn't such a bad thing, lots of really good high street shops are struggling to stay alive right now, and normally you'd never think to look in their windows due to the costs..but recently I got off a bus and noticed a suit in one such shop with a mad price of 40 quid on a suit that looked way better. I asked and the shop was about to close and was clearing stock at less than 10% of the normal prices...I got a kickass suit for 30 quid with a 350 quid price tag in it. I have no idea what the J/C think is reasonable for interview clothes but that could easily be within the limits couldn't it?

If I were your son, I'd ring a few small bulders or visit them in person...explain his situation and wish to get experience in the trade, and ask for any part time work they have when they hit busy spots. A keen lad asking face to face is sure to impress someone when the time comes. They can only say no, and I'd bet they won't like having to if they do. It only takes one not to and he's happy.
