mortgage exit fees - after divorce!

I was charged a mortgage exit fee and there is a balance available but it was in joint names. Can I claim my half if no longer in touch with ex-husband?

I'd be tempted to claim the whole lot (and set aside half for if you ex gets in touch). If it was money owing you would be jointly and severally liable.

What makes you think you can claim your mortgage exit fee back?
Early redemption charges are not reclaimable and are fair. Redemption charges can only be reclaimed back in part if the charge was higher than that which was in place when you started the mortgage or the last deal you bought (whichever is later). e.g. if it was £250 and you were charged £250 you can claim nothing. If it was £150 and you were charged £250 then you can claim £100 back.
The cheque issued by the lender if there is money due should be issued jointly although you can request it in two individual cheques for half each.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
