I don't know the wine you are talking about but I'd be a bit careful about 3 year old white wines on such a "special offer". Most mass market white wines, esp supermarket ones, have quite a short shelf life (couple of years max). Supermarkets often bring in big reductions to get rid of old stock which they know it is getting past its best and which they want to shift very quickly.
I recently bought a bottle of Pouilly Fume, from Sainsbury's at a knockdown price, opened the botle and was very disappointed. It tasted tired and flat not at all what I was expecting, looked at the label which said 2004 (should have done that first). I'm pretty sure I drank the same wine a year or so ago at the higher price and it was lovely.
Of course there are sometimes great deals when the supermarkets are trying to push new lines or the supplier is offering big discounts to get noticed. You might be lucky and it might be a bargain...but I'd buy one bottle try it and, if it passes the taste test, go back and empty the shelf!!!Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -
Although many white wines are produced to be drunk when 'young' many good quality whites will last much longer than 2 years. Pouilly Fume is a good example of such a wine. It may have been 'corked' - but either way you are fully entitled to return the part drunk bottle to ask for a refund. I have tasted whites (eg NZ Sauvignon Blanc) which are over 10 years old and found them to be excellent.
In a batch of 100 decent bottles you can expect maybe 2 or 3 to be below par. The wine producers - and retailers - accept this.0
