    What role did the solicitors have in this ...were they joint executors, or were they just arranging the sale of a house etc. This may be important, because it is the responsibility of the executor to make sure the estate is properly handled (taxes paid, legacies distributed etc.). If your FIL was sole executor, the liabilty for putting this right (and paying the tax) may lie with him.

    I think you need to contact the legal complaints service on 0845 608 6565 for advice on the possibility of the solicitor claiming out of their indemnity insurance.
