New PC for under £800

Hi ppl

I'm on the lookout for a new PC and wonder whether or not I should wait for the January Sales now. I've seen all the Dell offers but I'm not a great big fan of them as they always used to break at my old workplace and they aren't the easiest to upgrade so kinda looking for something that won't need upgrading for a few years BUT can be done if need be.

I guess I'm looking for something with the minimum spec of this:-

P4 3.2 GB / Athlon 64 Processor
512 MB RAM min (hopefully 1024)
100 GB mim HDD min
16x DVD Dual Writer
TV / Media Card
17" TFT with good response rate
128 graphics (pref 256) - which card though?
5.1 sound
Wireless Card
Integral Card Reader
Firewire / USB2 etc

Have seen a deal on PC World website for £650 (£779 instore) - Advent T9102 Base Unit and I checked the 17" TFT out and I thought it was crap. However have seen some decent 17" TFT with 16ms response rates for under £140 on Microdirect.

What do you reckon on this PC anyway and if any of you could spec up or recommend somewhere else I'd be most grateful.

Thanks in advance

  • I personally would buy my PC assembled to spec from a computer fair. You will always get great prices and if you stick around, you can watch him put it together.

And they usually throw in a few freebies and you can haggle about the price. ;)

I know this does not answer your question and its just a suggestion. ;D
The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.

Have you considered the latest Aldi computer?
They sold out straight away at my local store, but i'm sure you can order one for up to six months.
you get all the specs you wanted(some better)plus a 3 year warranty. No monitor, but for £699 you can afford to buy the one you want ;)
  • Do you have the spec for that Aldi one? - I saw them before and they looked wicked !!!!

How do you order one btw anyway?
  • Hi,

I bought one of them Advent T9102 before xmas. I am really pleased so far. I ended up paying £622 including delivery from Currys using a discount voucher of £35.

The fan is very noise at start up, but when at idle its the quietest system I have heard. Fan also picks up if you are putting a load on the system.

I managed a 3Dmark 03 of about 3100 which I am pleased with since it has the ATi X600 Pro card in it. Updating the drivers increased it slighly.

The system has one spare PCI card, but you could remove either the wan card, or TV / radio/modem card all in one card if you need more.

The computer has 512MB of PC3200 and uses two banks, leaving 2 spare for upgrading to 1024 for about £60.

I choose this system as I wanted a PCI express video card. I was going to upgrade to a 6600GT, but at the moment this system more than suits my needs a low price.

I was considering systems from Mesh, and Carrera, but this had extras for a lower price.

    Best Regards
