Has anyone ever dyed their sofa covers ?

I have a sofa by Sofa Workshop Direct and the removable covers which were a burgundy colour have faded through washing and being in the sun. Has anyone tried dying their own covers or used a professional dying company.

as long as they arent too big, then you should be able to do it at home

Buying dyes from highstreet shops can work out expensive, ie Dylon. sometimes you can get them slightly cheaper at ebay, but not usually in the quantities you would need. I would prob use a coldwater dye in the machine, rather than use the expensive 'machine dyes'.

i usually buy the 'dyrect' dyes from this company. https://www.omegadyes.co.uk

they work fine for dyeing sofa covers. im assuming that you have machine washed your covers already, and they dont have some special treatment on the, like scotchguard, as that could affect the dyeing process?

  • Have you dyed large bulky items in your own washing machine at home?

I have washed the covers several times and, although they were scotchguard protected when I bought them, I dont know whether any residue remains in the fabric after several washes. If anyone knows for sure, please let me know.

Thanks Flea, I'll have a look at the website you suggested for dyes.

as long as you can fit the covers in your machine you can dye them. the more room they have to swish around the better, but to fit the main cover of my sofa in the machine, its quite a tight squeeze. it does dye ok, but not as easily as the cushion covers, so i tend to add a bit extra dye, compared to when doing the smaller parts

I have dyed mine and it worled brilliantly, but the scotchguard may prove to be a bit of a problem as the dye may not sink in as well, is there any way you can patch test a small piece?
