My Lightbulb moment - the Money Secret

All this talk about lightbulb moments. I didnt think I'd actually had one, but last night i was astonished to realise that I experienced that moment without really noticing it. Last year although I was controlling the money, never mind not telling my hubby I had no idea how much in debt we were. After doing up the house on credit cards i was going along gaily paying off the minimum payments each month and couldnt understand why things seemed to be getting a lot worse rather than better (although more thru luck than judgement i did have a 0% Egg card). I was wandering round Smiths one day last May looking for a birthday card when I spotted this little book called the Money Secret. Didnt really want to buy it as I couldnt afford it but after reading the first few pages bought it anyway. Its fiction/fact, about this girl who is about to commit suicide because of all the debt she is in and she finds a kind of fairy godmother. Although its not as refined as the Money Diet (which I also have now) it did contain a lot of good basic advice. I went home, added up all the debt and found it to be £26000. I cut up all my credit cards, started using a debit card instead, cancelled my gym membership, changed my bank account from a fee paying account, started paying off the highest rate CC. Now the debt is at £17000 mainly due to the fact that we got some money from selling off a flat we had (we lost a lot of money on that by the way). I have all my accounts at 0% now and although its difficult intend to keep them that way till the debt is paid off. That moment when i picked up that book was my lightbulb moment. Thought I'd share it with you. By the way I think you all know what the Money Secret is.

Cool story tesuhoha. I will keep an eye out for that book (or maybe join the library!!!).

Thanks. I hope you will stick around to keep posting useful advice, tips & support for us all...and obviously share tales of how the rest of the debt repayment is going.

    Good luck!

Sorry folks cant tell you the name of the author cos the little book (like the fairy godmother person in the story) has done its work and disappeared.

  • I have just gone on the Amazon website and I think the author is Rob Parsons. It looks like a good book. They are selling it for £4.89 including P & P. Has anyone found it anywhere cheaper?

Yes that looks like it. Have been looking for the book in the house but cannot find it. The thing i like about this book is that it embodies the true spirit of the empowered money saver. i could probably put that better but dont know how.
