Hi All
Haven't posted for a while - hope you are all well?
We are about to move (13th May) to a flat with a garden (haven't had one this last year) I really want to grow some tomatoes so that we have some through the summer. My question is - how late can I leave it to plant them or do you think I should plant some seeds now and just grow them inside til we get there so I have made a start?
Thanks

Hi.
You can sow the seeds now, and depending on where you live, weather wise, the 13th of May is near enough the earliest you can plant the plants out anyway.
When I say weather wise, another 3-4 weeks in Devon Say and Beginning of June in Scotland. They do not like the frost one little bit.
If you have access to a garden centre I have seen and bought Plug-You-Grow plants. These are little seedlings that you plant into individual plant pots, or pot on as its called.
They are £2.99 for 8 plants, far more expensive than seeds but for me anyway 100% sucess, and given the amount of toms you get from each plant, a masive money saving.
To prevent them going spindly, place you plants on the suniest windowsill in your house and turn the pot half way around each day. The reason for this is they reach for the light, thus bending over. If you turn them they they keep theirselves reasonabley strong and upright.0 -
Excellent advice Linda - thank you - I will go to Garden Centre on Sat so will check those out - they sound like a good way to guarantee success.
Fingers crossed!!!

Last year I planted cherry-tomatoes and regular tomatoes in late June (due to house purchase). No huge crop with the regular toms but the cherry toms ripened faster and they were a good success!0

If you live near a nursery, you will probably get them a lot cheaper, and better plants.
Just a thought.0
