Wooden floors - there's a drop!

In my new house there is currently cream carpet in the lounge and dining room (its one big room) left by the previous owners which is a bit scabby, extremely worn and dirty (they had a dog). I want to put wooden floors/laminate down but the thing is at the end of the dining room bit where it joins the kitchen there is a drop, to go into the kitchen.

How do I put wooden flooring down in this instance?

How much of a drop is it? Is it a step down or just a couple of inches?

    Hi Valencia
If its just a small drop, you could probably get away with a coat or two of self levelling compound available from the usual DIY places for about £9 a bag. If its more than 5 or 6 mm, then you may have to shim the area with wood or packers before laying the laminate.

Thats not a drop its a step.
You can get various finishing strips like the ones used for carpets to hide the raw edge of the laminate.

PS Its a good idea to remove the skirting board before laying the laminate. Then you will get a much neater finish.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

You can get a stair profile for laminate and laminate the step itself or just get a square edge profile and stop at the end of dining room. Without seeing, its hard to say which would look better, but from experience, I would use the latter :)
