Tax deductions in pay slip

Maybe this isnt the right forum but if its better suited to somewhere else then please move it,

my qustion is about the tax i pay in my payslip, junes tax was £234.60, aprils was £92, march was £90, why the sudden increase from £92 to £234, is it because more is being taken so i can catch up, how dos it work, the tax code os 652L for june and 647L for april,

Not sure..but it seems like a huge jump - ask your employer or ask the HMRC why there has been such a huge leap.

As your tax code for June has gone up, the tax deducted should have gone down! It seems that someone has messed up, you definitely raise it with your payroll department.

Yes, without gross figures we cannot answer anything at all.

Also a question - Were you working all tax year last year? I mean April 08 to April 09?

Didn't you get a bonus or something in June?

There is a free site that can help you calculate your taxes called listen to tax man, I've found them via google, I've found it an excellent place for calculating my taxes, and getting updates on changes to tax policy and guidelines in calculating my taxes, use it but also speak to your companies hr or accounting department as to the jump, it seems quite high

It appears that you have had some previous pay and possibly tax added to your records. Check your payslip for June to see if that is the case, if you do not have a column for this have a look at the taxable gross to date and tax paid to date columns to see if they are different to the April May and June totals you have given.
If this is the case and you have not had any other taxable income for this year that accounts for this then ask your payroll dept. where the figure came from, if it came from the tax office then you will have to contact them, if it came from the payroll dept. ask where they got the figure from?
A possibility is that a P45 for last year was used and the pay and tax on that was wrongly used, instead of being ignored.

Without the P45 details I cannot be certain what has happened, but as you are now on code 652L this is probably the code on your P45. If this assumption is correct it means that you were getting a tax allowance in both your part time job and your current job. When the P45 details were added to your current job the tax you owe would be calculated based on only one tax allowance, the extra tax would then be taken from your June salary.

If you wish to post the details of the P45 I can check if your tax is now correct.
