boyfriend's crown fell off

Hi,
I posted here a while ago about pain getting my wisdom tooth out. After anti biotics it came out fine. I see the denstist 6 monthly and am a private patient. My bf in contrast had not been since univeristy and is now in his 30s. He went recently and joined local NHS one (despite me recomming and offering to pay for him to join mine.)
The dentist said he needed a root canal in one tooth and a crown. This took several appointments and cost about 60 for root canal and 90 for crown with extra small charges for xrays etc. Anyway he was happy he had the crown about a week and noticed it wobbled. I told him to go back. so he rung and made an appointment, however the day before he went for this appointment it came out while he was eating and he swallowed it. He went back and they say he needs another xray, an impression and another crown. Surely it should not have fell out so soon? Is it guaranteed? I looked at the NHS charges and it looks like it will be 189 under new system, this seems unfair as it fell out so soon. Also despite his lack of regular going to dentist other than this tooth he has no other fillings or treated teeth. Any advice welcomed?
thanks H x

How long ago did it come off? They take between 2 - 4 days to 'come out'!
It is 'recoverable'He will need a seive and a peg for his nose!
They survive the gut perfectly well, and I've re-cemented crowns that have been 'right through' (With appropriate disinfection!).
crowns are not 'guarenteed' against such eventualities on the NHS. Even if they were, the old NHS contract ended on 31st March, and everything began again on 1st April.
So it's either £189 or the seive! (Let him do it though, for goodness sake!)How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
I was just coming back here to query whether they might survive the journey through the body but Toothsmith has already answered it.0

it was a week ago. Ickkkkkkkkk that is horrid how could anyone you mean oh my god thats so un hygenic??? I guess your joking, nobody would do that to save money would they. I guess he pays 189 at his dentist. I think he would be better joining my dentist and paying privately as his dentist seems not good, he went last week after loosing it and can not go back to get another xray till friday this week, then the dentist wants another impression.. Just showed him what I posted and he says I am over stressing and as it a back tooth (two teeth back from the pointy vampire) tooth then he might get it out, I don't want him to be an old man with no teeth so I guess I volunteer to pay??? Would a private crown cost loads more I am sure my dentist would guarantee work she did for more than 3 weeks... Do crowns often fall out? If fitted properly would they wobble.
thanks lots for the replies.... I know so little about these things. H x0 -

And to the OP, those of us who've had children tend to be a little less squeamish about Toothsmith's suggestion! Again, :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
boyfriend's crown fell off
I hope you don't mind me smiling, but I thought this was going to be a thread about a boyfriend whose halo had slipped a bit. (Crown fell off, in the dog house...you get my drift!)May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
sorry to hi-jack the thread, but on March 31st hubby broke his tooth (by chewing a pen  ). It is on a bridge. Our dentist is still NHS, how much is it likely to cost?0

Impossible to say spendless without accurately knowing what damage has been done. It may be possible to repair the tooth if it is just the porcelain that has fractured but the aesthetics may not be as good as they were. At the other end of the scale you could be looking at a fracture of the root of the affected tooth which would necessitate extraction and replacement of the space by another means as the whole bridge would then be compromised. As I said, impossible to say, best just to get it checked asap. Would be prudent to tell your hubbie not to indulge in pen chewing again which can be disastrous for all types of restorations!0 -
