Help!! Can You Thicken A Casserole Without Using Cornflour

try adding a spoonful or two of redcurrant jelly or cranberry jelly or mustard to thicken. I make a sausage casserole with these ingredients in and they are there to add both flavour and thicken the sauce without the use of flour.

if its a beef / chicken casserole etc i use gravy granules too0

I used the flour mixed with water in the end and it thickened up straight away thanks for all your help everyone :j:eek:

if you buy the cheapy versions of any gravy like the beef or chicken, veg or onion you can do this and it really adds flavour and not that much cost
i like cheapy smash and will buy it specifically for this purpose. we don't make mash a lot so it's just easier to have it on hand and it's really cheap anyway (i'm talking tesco value here) and it at least adds a *bit* more nutrional value than cornflour does
also you'll find that brown flour thickens with less than whiteflour and it's better for you as well but i don't like faffing around with the flours myself as you have to be so careful of lumpsfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
I melt some butter and mix in any flour then add to a casserole to thicken0

Clear sauces should be thickend using a paste of arroweroot (powder mixed with water, slowly) bring to boil and should thicken.0

I usualy thicken sauces & casseroles with breadcrumbs, mashed potatoes or couscous. Double cream also works as does a knob of real butter. Gravy granules, tomato puree also. Hope this helps.0

I find porridge oats work well as a casserole/soup thickener as well - put in a tablespoon and give it 15 minutes0

When I make sausage casserole, I first caramelise the onions in a pan and that is when I add the flour and make the gravy and then add the oven browned sausages before putting in the oven, I also add a tin of tomatoes.0
