Sorry, sorry, sorry.....we call a sliced loaf a sliced pan in Ireland
That did cross my mind - bread in French is du painbigjon1968 wrote: »Thanks Marie, Penny and nopot2pin. I do have access to a hedgerow or two Marie, as I'm lucky enough to live in the middle of nowhere, so guess I will have to do a bit of research and find out what I am looking for. Penny, YS stuff is already my friend, just never heard the term before, so thanks for clearing that one up. And nopottopin, I do have a couple of friends who invite me to dinner from time to time, which is very useful at stretching the budget a bit further, but trying to be careful not to wear out my welcome
As you're now in the swing of budgeting in the Old Style way, I'll add this thread to the current Grocery Challenge. The experts there will give you loads of support in managing your budget, and there are loads of thrifty recipes on the front page :T

I can't believe the English posters didn't know what a sliced pan was!!! In my ignorance I assumed that everyone knew...
Well, you learn something new every day! :rotfl:
OP, well done on almost keeping within budget! 1kg of oats would last me almost a month BTW, they make a very economical breakfast! And they're also good for baking if you are game to try that. There are some great simple recipes here for oatcakes, bread etc - and oats also bulk out meat dishes such as chilli and spag bol.

p.s. Penny, why not leave this thread where it is for now? Seconded. I hardly ever come into OS because the threads are so long and all merged together. It's impossible to find anything once that happens.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

What is it you want to findThis is a thread about managing your grocery budget; so is the Grocery Challenge
Surely it'll help the OP to have support from others in a similar situation

I mean that when I come onto OS I am confronted with huge long threads where everyone is chatting, and as a result they are difficult to find information in, and feel cliquey, so I don't bother with them, plus I don;t want to have to read 20 pages to find info!
I also mean that if I come on here and do a search for something, I usually cannot find it at all and have to post, and then get merged into something long and unwieldy so I go away again.
And if the search does thwo something up, I am again confronted with pages and pages to trawl through, which I don't want to do.
I honestly feel that OS is impenetrable if you aren;t a regular on here - it feels very cliquey because of all the massive chatty threads.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

Oh, and the grocery challenge is probably not the same as a £10 a week budget so it's a different question, even if related, so the specific info becomes lost in the quagmire of generality created by merging threads.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

If the BGs stopped merging threads, you would come onto OS and be confronted by pages and pages of threads started the same day some of which would even have the same title. It has happened. If you can't find something using the search facility anyway, why would lots of thread of the same title and subject make it any easier for you?
Don't see the problem personally. I would rather have long threads than millions of threads about the same thing.
The only threads that are chatty are the Flylady, weight loss and Daily threads... hardly the sort of threads you would be searching for useful info on a specific subject. I don't find any threads cliquey. never have, even when I was a newbie.0 -
Well HJ that's your experience but mine is as I've stated - I find it unwieldy and difficult to use, mainly because of the obsession with merging threads.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
