My DH works as a pest control technician (I'm not allowed to mention which company he works for).

Out of interest what attracts you to the industry? What do you think a normal day consists of for a pest control tech?

There are two ways to get into the pest control business.
    • Pass the BPCA level 2 qualification yourself
    • find a technicians job advertised and apply "green"
There really is no real benefit to passing the exams yourself as most pest control companies will hire people with no relevant qualifications no problem, BUT if you come up against someone with experience you wont get the job even if they also have no qualifications. Its only in the last few years large companies have started to ask for external qualifications, unfortunately its one of those industries where if you arent doing the job then studying/gaining enough knowledge to pass the exams will be neigh on impossible.

Contact the bigger companies such as Ecolab, Rentokil, Mitie, Cannon (being sure to contact their regional offices NOT head office). If that fails start contacting the smaller local companies listed in your yellow pages and ask if they need any help with "job work".

I have a cockroach infestation in my flat at the minute, i actually really enjoyed killing them! :D I have had the exterminator round he has put down roach killer but seen as i live in a block of flats the infestation is not local to mine alone, the whole block is infested. I found in my bathroom where some were trying to nest (in a air freshener of all places, they were eating the freshener gel about 10 of them) i honestly would enjoy this kind of work!!

Typical day in a exterminators life - go to properties, lay down pest killers from 9am to 5pm like a normal job, what does involve a typical day?

Thanks for the info i will contact them companies very soon.

Be very careful how you kill a cockroach sometimes by squashing them you can actually release their eggs and so create more of them. By stamping on them the eggs can stick to your shoe and then you can transport them elsewhere. You can get some sticky pad things that will collect them to be disposed of I don't think they are too expensive.
