It was on five news tonight that one undated 20p sold on ebay for £5500:eek: it is reckoned that they will become more valuable if you keep a hold of them.
To think that I just used them as 20ps and now I havent got any new ones, I only have old ones:rolleyes: I shall be keeping my eyes peeled mind.0 -
I found one! Thanks to everyone on this thread, especially Horace who started it - I had no idea about this story until spotting it here. Sure enough, had a rummage through my pile of loose change, and there one was. It's on ebay now... fingers crossed. God knows I needed a bit of financial luck!

Now here's a question though - and this might open it open to a lot more people maybe.... I've also noticed on ebay that some 20p coins produced in 2008 with a date are also selling well on the site.
They're not being mis-sold: they're clearly advertised as being dated, with 2008 on the Heads side. However, it seems that the type of design (the shield) also makes them collectable for some people.
For instance, this morning one standard 20p from the 2008 'Shield' design - with the 2008 date on it - sold for £102! Another one has just sold for £56. Is anyone here a coin expert? If this is all accurate, then a lot of people here could be sitting on 20p coins worth a lot more than face value, even if they do have '2008' on the front.... I've just found a couple, for instance.

(just wish I'd seen this thread a week ago, before bagging up £40 worth of 20p coins and taking them to the bank!)

I wonder why this is? I have loads of the 2008 ones, finally I have a reason to thank my husband for leaving a ton of coins in his pockets when he puts his trousers in the wash

Simple. People are stupid!
There is nothing special about the one you've linked to. It's just a 20p. Nothing more, nothing less!
The only time I can think of as to when a 'normal' coin would be worth more is if it had not been in general circulation and so would be essentially a perfect coin (no knocks, marks or dents on it). But the one you've linked even says that it's been circulated, so the 20p is worth......wait for it..... 20p!No trees were killed to send this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced. - Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson)0 -
has anyone checked who sold/bought these overpriced coins?
methinks its all soirced from the coin trading company themselves..
btw, London Mint is a private firm.
The Royal Mint actually make the things.Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
The place to look or ask about the price of coins is Spink.
I shall keep a look out for any undated coins and will keep them safely in my Liberty box:D0
