Butter smells!!!

Options
Hi everyone, I was given a half a pack of unsalted butter by my Dad who was emptying his fridge as he was going to his second home abroad until Sept. It can't have been that old as he only came back for 3 weeks in May so will have bought it during that time. I've opened it up this morning and it smells a bit cheesy!!! It looks okay and I don't want to waste it. Is it off? Can I still use it? My initial thought was if it is safe to eat I might make cheese scones so the cheesiness is not too apparent!!! Any thoughts???

Unsalted butter goes off faster than salted variety because salt is a preservative. I would probably make something like macaroni cheese or cauliflower cheese.
You couls also watch last tango in paris and get a few ideas for it:eek:

I found that last week too!
Some unsalted that my DH had left out coz he was using it on his toast (and complaining that it didn't taste right - eejit) - anyway the butter smelled like stilton cheese!

I would have to feed other people with whatever I used it in. Once I've smelt food with an off smell , I can/ imagine I can , smell or taste it in whatever I've made!!

Hmm, it stars Marlon Brando, so it's not terribly erotic. However, I did almost wet myself laughing when Tesco brought out a fake butter called "butter me up"...:rotfl:

I would just avoid unsalted butter even if it's fresh. Why does it have such a horrible smell?

It's possible that your unsalted butter was made by the old process of using sour cream, ie making a fermented product. So called "sweet butter" which is what we usually have now (salted or not) is made from fresh cream, and became the norm when butter was made in factories because it meant that the machinery did not have to be cleaned after every batch but could run continuously.
The sour cream or fermented product has a stronger smell and a greater depth of flavour which some people still prefer, although it is unusual to be able to get it except as an artisan product. The flavour is now so unusual and unfamiliar that it can seem "off" when it is not.
I admit that this does not necessarily help you in being able to judge if your butter is safe to use, but if you Google the manufacturer you may be able to find out?
