Cauldron veggie sausages - white stuff growing?

Hi

My freezer section desperately needs defrosting and as such my fridge isn't working brilliantly. I've just pulled out a packet of Cauldron vegetarian sausages that have not been opened, however I can see a few spots of white fluffy stuff on them. I assume this is mould (they're dated use by 29th June, however as the fridge isn't performing I'm guessing they've not been kept as cold as they should have).

My question is - if I scrape this off will they still be edible if cooked thoroughly? The main ingredients are tofu and onion. Will it actually still taste ok?

Thanks for the help

xx

I think they would, but really only you can tell

As the base is tofu, which is from bean curds it is sort of "vegan cheese" and has been around for a few millenia, well before refrigeration [sp?] so presumably, like cheese, will keep without making you ill or tasting funny

    Same with onions

Normally I would say just eat it but after searching for some concrete info I would err on the side of caution and throw them out. Its the toxins produced by the mould that cause problems not the spores themselves although they can be problematic to people with allergies

There is a good table on this page about what is safe when mouldy and what isn't http://www.fsis.usda.gov/FactSheets/Molds_On_Food/index.asp#16

Thanks for the advice, and the useful table. I can't figure out which column they'd come under.

Anyway, I scraped it all off (there wasn't as much as I'd thought), fried them up then cooked them longer in a sauce. Have just eaten the sauce but not the sausages, although they gave it a nice flavour. Will see how OH feels about eating the rest!

I eat these sausages quite often and I have seen this white stuff on them many times. I'm not convinced it's mould, I just thought it seeps out from the inside. If it is mould these are the most susceptible thing to mould I've ever come across. Anyway, whatever it is it hasn't done me any harm.
