hi,
My son bought a flat a while ago but now he is reutrning home to live.
The flat is now up for sale. We have left some furniture in it as the wife wants to "stage the flat" to make it more arractive for potential buyers.
If and when it is sold we will remove all these items.
My query is council tax payable on the unoccupied flat ?.
Anyone been in this sort of situation, any advice appreciated.
Thanks

Council Tax will be payable on the property.
An unoccupied/unfurnished property is exempt 6 months before a charge becomes due but an unoccupied/furnished property is chargeable from the date the property became unoccupied.
The charge for a furnished/unoccupied property varies depending on the authority from between 50% and 10% discount. You need to check with your local authority for the rate they charge.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
